If you work in an office, you’ve probably experienced this before: you enter the breakroom to find a birthday celebration for your colleague. There’s merriment, singing, and of course, some sort of birthday cake.
You might be one of those people who dives right in and partakes in the festivities, cake and all. Or perhaps you pass on the cake, more concerned with “controlling” your intake.
But in actuality, what happens next goes far beyond something as simple as so-called “self-control.”
When it comes to the science of hunger and weight, we’ve come so far in the last decade. And, we have so much left to learn.
From surging hormones, to brain synapses, a mixture of genetics and life experiences influences how we respond to food.
And when you take your first bite? That internal machine becomes many times more complicated. Your fullness, your satisfaction level, how the calories you’re eating are used, how much fat is created and where that fat goes… all of it comes down to a cocktail of factors we’re just beginning to grasp.
I’m Joe Hanson, a science storyteller and host of PBS’s Be Smart, and I’ll be your guide for season seven of Science Will Win.
This time, we’re talking all about the science of obesity. That means the cutting-edge research that’s changing the way we think about hunger and weight, the multifaceted impact of this chronic disease, and where the research is going next.
We’ll dive into history, genetics, hormones, comorbidities, and real patient experiences… and you’ll leave with a much more nuanced understanding of the complex disease we call obesity.
